🏈 Let’s Kick-off Super Bowl Week by making our own Football Playbook for our pets!
Are you prepared to keep your pets safe during the big game this weekend? The best Strategy we know is to go on the Offensive and Plan Ahead!
Before the game starts, have a Huddle with your family and guests to make sure everyone knows to keep an eye on all the pets to protect them from pet suffocation.
🍿 Hand-Off all the food bags so they can be cut up and disposed of properly. Assign Special Teams to serve all the chips, popcorn, pretzels, cookies, and all the other delicious snacks in plastic or glass bowls instead of in the bags and to keep the trash cans emptied and lids tightly shut.
Let’s not Fumble on Super Bowl Sunday! The only Sack we want to see is a Quarterback Sack, not a food Sack out.
Help us Tackle pet suffocation by keeping your cats and dogs safe from the suffocation Red Zone.
So, now you can relax and enjoy this Sunday while you Cheer on your favorite team knowing you’re a Team Player! Winning!

🐱 Cats are vulnerable to pet suffocation, too! We have lost several felines to chip bags and other food bags, but another danger for cats is getting trapped in containers or enclosed places.
That is what happened to this beautiful Calico kitten, Bridgette, in January when she got trapped and suffocated in a Tidy Cat litter container, devastating her owner.
Laurie Barta writes, “I have to make a long story short due to my personal trauma. My 9 month old kitten Bridgette got into a plastic litter container and went to sleep. Another cat must have jumped onto the lid and closed it. I thought she got out and searched for her for days until I needed to add litter to the pan. That’s when I got completely hysterical. She had been trapped in there for days. My heart is broken and I am angry.”
Cats are quick on their feet and their agility allows them to easily jump on countertops, tables, refrigerators, and other appliances where they have easier access to food bags and containers. Cats are also prone to hiding in enclosed and small places like bins, plastic containers, and washers and dryers. Please be aware!
🏈 Are you an NFL fan? If so, we’re betting you’ll tune into the NFL Conference Championship football games this weekend!
As you’re getting ready for a fun weekend at home, remember to keep the safety of your pets in mind. It’s easy to get distracted while enjoying the games and not notice what your pets may be getting into. Here’s what you can do:
🐶 Serve chips and snacks in resealable plastic containers or glass bowls instead of bags
🐱 Cut up all chip bags and snack bags
🐶 Keep your kitchen pantry door and trash can lids closed
🐱 Be extra vigilant to ensure that any other guests are aware of the risks of pet suffocation and its causes

I never thought too much about obtaining pet insurance until I was a guest in December on a Dog Health and Wellbeing Panel Discussion hosted by Puppy Gang Fresh Foods in Canada. Another guest panelist was AJ Percal, General Manager of Furkin Pet Insurance. It was very enlightening listening to AJ talk about the benefits of pet insurance, especially in emergency situations when there isn’t a lot of time to waste.
Coincidentally, on December 26th, my 11 year old Springer Spaniel, Jag, woke up and could barely move his back legs. This was alarming as it had never happened before. Since Christmas fell on a Sunday, December 26th was considered a holiday, and my vet office was closed. I had to take Jag to the ER veterinarian office nearby. After several X-Rays and an exam, Jag was diagnosed with a soft tissue injury, likely from jumping. With the exam, x-rays, and medication, our bill was $800.00 – an unexpected expense on the heels of Christmas. And, that’s when I wished I had pet insurance!
As the Founder of Prevent Pet Suffocation, I hear tragic stories daily about heartbroken pet owners who find their beloved dog or cat unresponsive from nearly suffocating or having already suffocated in a food bag or container. Many frantic owners rush their pets to the vet hoping to revive them with CPR and oxygen. Some are successful. Pet suffocation is always unexpected and catches every owner by shock and surprise. This is exactly the type of pet accident that pet insurance would apply.
Jag’s x-rays also revealed his heart murmur had progressed and his bladder had several bladder stones in it. As a senior dog, I foresee other issues occurring though he is in great health overall. I’ll definitely be checking into any pet insurance options for a senior dog and also options for the younger dogs my children own.
If you live in Canada, check out Furkin Pet Insurance at Furkin. They offer comprehensive coverage and flexible deductibles. For those in the United States, there are several reputable pet insurance companies to fit your needs.

🚨 HOLIDAY SAFETY REMINDER! Are you prepared to keep your pets safe this holiday season?
You know to keep things like chocolate, mistletoe, poinsettias, holly, ornaments, and tinsel away from your pets, but don’t forget about the sparkly and decorative plastic bags your holiday goodies come in!
These seemingly innocuous items CAN pose a suffocation danger to your pets.
🍪 So, while you’re baking your holiday treats and wrapping presents, be sure to transfer all food bags and food treats to plastic or glass containers to keep your pets safe and sound!
Then, cut up all of your bags and dispose of them properly.

Today, December 15, 2022, is the 11th anniversary of the day our beautiful rescue dog, Blue, died when he suffocated in a Frito Lay Cheetos chip bag. I will never forget the horrifying shock of finding him. I think of him every time we lose another innocent pet to suffocation. Like so many others, I had never heard of pet suffocation until it happened to my dog.
It is also the day I vowed to start a mission to spread awareness on the dangers of pet suffocation from chip bags and other food packaging. That mission, Prevent Pet Suffocation, is now a non-profit. We have made huge strides with our international awareness campaign to educate the public on how to prevent pet suffocation which happens daily, and within minutes.
Blue serves as the “poster dog” for pet suffocation as Prevent Pet Suffocation continues to work hard to make sure awareness and prevention of pet suffocation becomes common knowledge. However, it would not be this successful without all of you – the loyal followers, supporters, and advocates who continue to support this mission with your positive feedback and your dedication to sharing the posts and messages. Numerous dogs and cats have been saved, and we will continue to spread the word!
Sadly, our pets and wildlife are still losing their lives in food bags and containers, but with your help, we can keep moving forward. So, in honor of Blue and all the other pets we have lost to suffocation, please consider making a donation today – no amount is too small! To donate, please click on the Donate Button on the Home page of our website, www.preventpetsuffocation.com.Thank you all again!
