Have you ever played fetch or catch with a ball with your pup? Did you know toy balls could get lodged in your dog’s throat, leading to suffocation within minutes?

After Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a non-profit research and advocacy organization dedicated to companion animal and consumer safety, started receiving more reports on this, they conducted testing and concluded heavy balls with a smooth surface were particularly culpable in getting lodged in a dog’s throat, especially the balls thrown with a launcher. CPS recommends pet owners be very careful about throwing smooth and heavy balls to their dogs. If you use a ball launcher, launch away from the dog.

Always choose toys appropriate for your pet’s size. Use a ball slightly larger than your pup’s throat to help prevent a choking hazard. Always supervise your pets during playtime – choking can happen very quickly.

Playing with our pups is one of the best parts of owning a dog. It’s important to always put your pet’s safety first! 🐶🐱🐶

🚨 HOLIDAY SAFETY REMINDER! Are you prepared to keep your pets safe this holiday season? ⁣

You know to keep things like chocolate, mistletoe, poinsettias, holly, ornaments, and tinsel away from your pets, but don’t forget about the sparkly and decorative plastic bags your holiday goodies come in!⁣

These seemingly innocuous items CAN pose a suffocation danger to your pets.⁣

🍪 So, while you’re baking your holiday treats and wrapping presents, be sure to transfer all food bags, food treats, and pet treats to plastic or glass containers to keep your pets safe and sound!⁣

Then, cut up all of your bags and dispose of them properly.⁣

Today, December 15, 2024, is the 13th anniversary of the day our beautiful rescue dog, Blue, died when he suffocated in a Frito Lay Cheetos chip bag. I will never forget the horrifying shock of finding him. I think of him every time we lose another innocent pet to suffocation. Like so many others, I had never heard of pet suffocation until it happened to my dog.

It is also the day I vowed to start a mission to spread awareness on the dangers of pet suffocation from chip bags and other food packaging. That mission, Prevent Pet Suffocation, is now a non-profit. We have made huge strides with our international awareness campaign to educate the public on how to prevent pet suffocation which happens daily and within minutes.

Blue serves as the “poster dog” for pet suffocation as Prevent Pet Suffocation continues to work hard to make sure awareness and prevention of pet suffocation becomes common knowledge. However, it would not be this successful without all of you – the loyal followers, supporters, advocates, and pet lovers who continue to support this mission with your positive feedback and your dedication to sharing the posts and messages. Numerous dogs and cats have been saved, and we will continue to spread the word!

Sadly, our pets and wildlife are still losing their lives in food bags and containers, but with your help, we can keep moving forward. So, in honor of Blue and all the other pets we have lost to suffocation, please consider making a donation today on the Donate Button on our website – no amount is too small! Thank you all again! 🐶❤️🐱

🐱 Calling all cat lovers! Did you know that December is National Cat Lover’s Month?⁣

⁣We’re here to remind you that cats are JUST as vulnerable to pet suffocation as dogs. ⁣

⁣Though we hear many stories from dog owners, it’s important we don’t forget about our feline family members as well. Their agility allows them to easily jump on food counters, tables, and refrigerators, where they have easier access to food bags and containers. ⁣

⁣Cats are also prone to hiding in enclosed and small places like bins, plastic containers, and washers and dryers. ⁣

⁣So, what can you do?⁣

⁣🐱 Be extra cautious when leaving bags on top of the fridge, in the laundry room or garage, and on countertops and shelves.⁣

⁣🐱 Cut up all bags and dispose of them properly.⁣

⁣🐱 Keep all containers tightly closed and safely out of reach of your pets.⁣

⁣🐱 Always close drawers and appliance lids like washers and dryers.⁣

⁣Cats are quick on their feet, and we have to stay on our toes! Visit our website for more helpful tips and information.
